What Flourish does well, and where it stops
Flourish earned its place in newsrooms for good reasons: beautiful templates, animated stories, and an embed that just works. If you publish public data and you are happy with a template-first workflow, it is a solid tool, and Datastripes respects that.
The friction starts in three places. First, your data has to be uploaded to Flourish’s servers to be rendered, which rules it out for many corporate, financial and healthcare datasets. Second, it begins after your data is already clean and shaped; the exploration that finds the story happens somewhere else. Third, the jump from the free public tier to a private, branded workspace is a big one for freelancers and small teams.
The unfair advantage: a visualization engine that runs in your browser
Datastripes was built client-side from day one. Parsing, aggregation, statistics and rendering run in your browser tab through WebAssembly and JavaScript. On private plans the dataset is never sent to our infrastructure, and the AI assistant only sees a compressed description of your columns, not the rows.
That one architectural choice is why compliance teams can say yes. It is also why the editor feels fast: a 500,000-row file is filtered on your own CPU, with no round trip to a server queue.
From raw file to published story in one place
With most chart makers you arrive with a finished table and leave with a picture of it. Datastripes starts one step earlier. You drop the raw export, it profiles every column, flags missing values and outliers, and writes a first Data Story with the numbers that changed. You then keep the charts that matter, write around them, and publish.
When the source sheet is updated, the published embed can update with it, or stay frozen at the version you reported. Both are a click.
Pricing designed for people who publish
Public projects are free forever: unlimited charts and stories, embeddable anywhere, with a small “Made with Datastripes” credit and a listing in the public gallery. Pro, at €19 a month, removes the credit, keeps projects private and adds password links and exports. Team, at €199 a month, gives a newsroom or agency up to ten seats, shared templates and embeds on a custom domain. Enterprise adds SSO, audit logs and a self-hosted runtime for organisations that cannot use any external cloud.
When Flourish is still the better choice
If your team has years of Flourish templates, a house style built inside it, and only ever publishes public data, switching has a real cost. Datastripes makes most sense for new projects, for confidential datasets, and for teams that want the exploration and the publishing in the same tool. Many users run both for a while and move project by project.
