Data privacy and architecture
Flourish is a hosted service: to build and render a visualization, your data sheet is uploaded to and stored on its servers. For public statistics that is perfectly fine. For embargoed results, client data or anything with personal information, it often means a lengthy security review or a flat no.
Datastripes runs its engine in the browser using WebAssembly. On Pro, Team and Enterprise plans the rows stay on the user’s device; the AI assistant receives only a compressed schema of column names and types. Enterprise customers can also self-host the embed runtime. If privacy is your deciding factor, this is the biggest difference between the two.
Templates and visual polish
Flourish has a large and mature template library, including some very distinctive animated formats, and many newsrooms have built a house style on top of it. That is a real strength and the main reason to stay.
Datastripes offers 35+ chart types, maps and tables, scrollable stories and dashboards, with themes you can save as a shared house style on the Team plan. It focuses less on one-off showpiece animations and more on getting a clear, accurate, interactive chart published quickly.
Before the chart: cleaning and exploration
Flourish expects you to arrive with data in roughly the right shape. Datastripes starts with the raw file: it profiles every column, detects types, dates and outliers, and lets you filter, group and compare before you choose a chart. Its first output is an automatic Data Story that highlights what changed, which is often where the headline comes from.
For teams that already have analysts preparing data, this matters less. For a solo reporter or a marketer with a messy export, it removes one or two tools from the workflow.
Embeds and performance
Both tools produce responsive iframe embeds that work in WordPress, Ghost, Webflow and most CMSs. Datastripes embeds resize to their content, stay interactive on mobile, and can be locked to a published version or updated live from the source sheet. Team plans can serve embeds from your own custom domain.
Pricing models
Both tools follow a similar freemium logic: free public work with branding, paid plans for privacy and brand control. Datastripes Public is free forever, with a “Made with Datastripes” credit and gallery listing. Pro is €19 per month for one person with private, unbranded projects. Team is €199 per month for up to ten seats with templates and custom domains. Enterprise is priced on request. Check Flourish’s current pricing page for its plans, since they change over time.
Our honest recommendation
Choose Flourish if you publish mostly public data, you rely on its specific templates, and your team already works well inside it. Choose Datastripes if your data is confidential or regulated, if you want exploration and publishing in one tool, or if you are a freelancer or small team that needs private, branded embeds without enterprise pricing.
